I attended CatalystCon last week and have so much to share. CatalystCon was “a conference created to inspire exceptional conversations about sexuality.” It had all the rich offerings at many conventions – panels, speakers, sponsors and enthusiastic, badge-wearing participants. What made it fascinating were the subject matter and the people.
In the field of sexuality, there are many players – everything from authors and sex educators to adult film producers and sex workers. Given that there are varying degrees of social acceptance in that list of professions, some people use their real names and some have pen names or work incognito. This became a unique part of the networking experience for me.
I met Dr. Lindsey Doe, a clinical sexologist, on the pasta buffet line on the first night of the convention. As we later made our way to a workshop, she asked me while gesturing to a stylish woman walking ahead of us, “is that Cunning Minx?” Cunning Minx is a well-known proponent of the relationship style called polyamory. Her website and podcasts on the subject are very popular.
The doctor continued, “She tweeted that she wants to meet me, but I’m not sure that’s her. She’s so cunning!”
A rare glimpse of Cunning Minx. |
As it turns out, that beauty up ahead was Cunning Minx. I later learned that Dr. Doe is a celebrity herself with her lively and educational YouTube channel, Sexplanations.
Doe. Hmm, maybe her last name’s a pseudonym, too. Another mystery to unravel from my CatalystCon experience. Here’s Dr. Doe’s fun introduction to the weekend.
Thanks, Dee Dennis, Founder of CatalystCon. The next one is scheduled for March 2014 in Virginia. Who’s going?!
One of the challenges of stellar conferences like CatalystCon is that
it’s really tough to meet everyone you want to meet and do everything
you want to do! However, I’d say that serendipity does play a big part.
Hallway moments are the best!
